The Positini- My Self-Coaching Layoff Cocktail

Getting laid off from my job at a software company should not have been a surprise.  Many people had been let go – hello – why did I think I would be different? Still,  I felt as if I’d let everyone down- the company, myself and my family and that I’d put us at risk of losing our home. If you know of someone still going through this, watch Jason Reitman’s adaption of Up in the Air as he captures this feeling of loss on the big screen. He interviewed people who were laid off and used their scenes throughout the film.

When companies hire you, they welcome you to the family but when you’re laid off they tell you not to take it personally.

Here’s how I was able to start drinking my own Kool-aid, again:

  • Let go of resentment and anger and start with a twist of the ego
  • Add a 1/2 cup of rest and relaxation
  • Splash on serious gratitude, make a list if you need to
  • Garnish with laughter from supportive, positive family and friends
  • Stir in some pro-bono consulting, keep your mind sharp
  • Serve up your best, positive self to connected colleagues
